I was offered an opportunity to design and teach a course on the fundamentals of Book Design as part of a series on self-publishing, hosted by the amazing Harford County Public Libraries in Maryland. I had only previously designed one self-published book, but this was an introductory course for non-designers, and I was confidant that my extreme familiarity with all relevant design fundamentals would serve their clients well. Expecting perhaps a dozen authors, I was suprised when over 35 people showed up! Topics covered included typography (typefaces, classifications, kerning, sizing, anatomy, visual heirarchy), color theory (color wheel, color harmony, contrast, temperature, symbolism and psychology), design fundamentals (7 elements of art, principles of composition) and the design process (research, planning, concept development, digitization and software). Thankfully I got over my initial nerves, and am proud to have been told by multiple students that they really benefited from the course. Download the course powerpoint.
